Description
A perpetually scrolling Pinterest board displays an array of Asian beauty tutorials, makeup products, style guides, and magazine covers, interwoven with early 2000s Japanese aesthetics. The continuous movement of images on a conveyor belt evokes the algorithmic rhythm of digital consumption—an infinite cycle of curated visuals that shape and reinforce cultural perceptions.
This work interrogates the commodification of identity within consumer culture, where Asian aesthetics are flattened into trends, repackaged, and sold for mass appeal. The mechanized presentation reflects how Western markets selectively absorb and aestheticize Asian cultural elements while erasing their deeper cultural significance.
By incorporating images from her personal Pinterest boards, Moon highlights the passive ways individuals internalize algorithmically driven narratives about race, beauty, and self-perception.
DIY ASIAN (I) serves as a reminder of how consumer culture conditions engagement with racialized imagery, shaping identity through the passive act of scrolling. Moon’s work reveals the subtle, yet pervasive, ways in which digital platforms commodify heritage, turning deeply personal cultural signifiers into aestheticized, marketable objects.
How does the act of scrolling shape what we accept as beauty, culture, and identity?
